HANGING LIGHT
How does reflective art interact with light?
Reflective artwork changes with its surroundings. Silver and gold leaf catch and respond to natural and interior light, revealing different details, textures and reflections throughout the day.
Placement can become part of the experience. Across from a window, changing daylight can bring reflective elements forward and allow them to recede as the light shifts. Under interior lighting, metallic details can create more subtle moments of illumination and depth. As the viewer moves through the room, perspective changes the work again.
Not every work incorporates reflective materials, but in those that do, light becomes an active part of the composition—allowing the artwork to reveal itself differently from one moment to the next.
UNDERSTANDING THE COLLECTION
What is the difference between an original artwork and a limited edition print?
Original artworks are one-of-a-kind works created by Jess Domain. They may include photography, painting or mixed media on canvas, paper or metal. Depending on the piece, Domain may incorporate acrylic or oil paint, silver leaf and 22k gold leaf, with detailed metalwork created using the kirikane technique. Each original exists as a singular work.
Limited edition fine art prints are produced from Domain's original photography in a predetermined, finite edition. Printed using archival inks on fine art paper, canvas or metal, each edition is individually numbered and signed. Once an edition is complete, no additional prints are produced in that edition.
Both are collectible works of art; an original is unique, while a limited edition is one of a defined number of signed works produced from an original photograph.
MATERIALS & TECHNIQUE
What materials and techniques does Jess Domain use in her artwork?
Materials and processes vary from work to work. Domain works with original photography, archival canvas and paper, acrylic and oil paint, silver leaf and 22k gold leaf.
Photography may stand on its own or become the foundation for additional layers of paint and hand-applied metal leaf. Other works are created directly on canvas, allowing texture, gesture and the natural character of the surface to become part of the composition.
In her mixed-media works, Domain applies larger areas of silver and gold leaf by hand, while finer details are created using kirikane, a traditional Japanese technique of precisely cutting and applying extremely fine pieces of metal leaf. The combination of broader areas of leaf and intricate kirikane detailing creates surfaces that respond differently to light and viewing angle.
Professional-grade and archival materials are selected with longevity in mind. Because the metal leaf and kirikane details are applied by hand, each original carries subtle variations in surface, texture and reflection.
